Pencil + Technology = Art

I am appreciating how Ben Heine creates his art expression by combining his pencil sketches with modern technology.  What an interesting combination.

Do you still use a pencil?  I am a big fan of using the old fashion pencil with the eraser on the end. Perhaps I get to bring my playful, kid self to work when using a pencil.  It feels good in my hand, it is not as serious or permanent as ink and the option to erase is comforting.  They are perfect for writing notes and as a drawing tool. The mug on my desk is full of different pencils and one of my favorites is the Hello Kitty pencil.

Here is a quote from Ben Heine’s biography page on his website, “Pencil Vs Camera” mixes drawing and photography, imagination and reality. It’s a new visual concept invented and initiated by Ben Heine in 2010. It’s full of magic, illusion, poetry and surrealism.”  His home page has step by step images demonstrating his art process, great to watch.  Take time to check out the Ben Heine website.

  1. That is a very interesting photo. It is amazing how the drawing and photo are so precise .

I agree with using the pencil, it in some way makes me become intimate with whatever I am creating whether it be a essay on World War I or a rendering of a room I study and copied. Such an impact!

    • Hi Lydia- I appreciate your comment and like the word intimate. I think this is what I feel to when I am working with a pencil. Thanks – Prof. Stephanie
