The Hike Guy – Kolby Kirk

kolby

Wow, Kolby Kirk keeps an awesome travel journal with amazing drawings from his hiking adventures.  The Hike Guy has wonderful drawings of his hiking trips on his site.  I too enjoy studying butterfly wing patterns and can appreciate his drawing page above. When traveling to the Grand Tetons to spend the week hiking, the first stop was to buy a book  “ to be able to study butterflies and enjoy drawing the patterns of their wings.”  Below he has taken time to study and draw the wild flowers which assists in his ability to identify them.

Here is the quote about this page “Page 103-104Instead of picking and pressing flowers in my journal as I did on trips of the past, I decided to paint them instead. These wildflowers of the Sierra were painted on the trail and once identified, were a useful key for the rest of the trek. I find that sketching flowers for identification requires an eye for detail. By the end of my trek, I was able to identify dozens of flowers thanks to the time I spent studying/sketching them.”

I’m in love with this wildflower sketchbook. A lot of details collected. He was having fun.

    • I too really like the focus he has on his journal drawings. I keep a travel journal and yet I don’t put in as much time as he does. Glad you enjoyed this – Prof. Stephanie

  2. These pages remind me of A. Wainwright, and the notebooks and journals I use to walk in the Lake District: obsessed with walking, he’d head off to the Lakes whenever possible, writing, doodling, drawing, and inadvertently documenting 214 fells, which we can now enjoy, still in his hand.
