Daffodil Copic Marker Rendering

daffodil-2 Last week I bought a container of daffodils and found time to create an illustration with my fine black markers.  It was great fun to add color to the drawing using my Copic markers.  I was actually on a phone meeting, with the flowers on my desk, when I completed the first quick sketch to organize how the flowers would fit together.

quick-sketch-aThe drawing below is on marker rendering paper. I started with a light pencil drawing and added the fine line marker on top, erasing the pencil when I was done.  Notice the bee started on the left side and then moved to the right in the finished drawing.

Bird Sketchbook Journal

bird-journal

Happy New Year!  This year I am challenging myself to create a sketchbook journal with drawings of birds that I am seeing in my area.  I have enjoyed bird watching for forty years and look forward to having birds as my sketching and drawing inspiration.  Here are a couple of images that I have created to get started.  The collage above has an Eastern Screech-Owl and the two birds below are the White-Breasted Nuthatch and the Greater Pewee.

Carolina Chickadee and Junco Illustration

holiday-bird-2016-finalEnjoyed creating my holiday card this year with two North Carolina mountain winter birds, the Carolina Chickadee and the Dark-Eyed Junco.  It is fun to have bare winter trees because it makes it easier to see and identify the birds.

The Imperfect Three Pear Illustration

pears-threeThis past weekend I was inspired to do a quick color illustration with three pears came home from the grocery store.  Love that the size, color, and value are all different.  Since this is the first time that I rendered pears using Copic Markers, the results are not quite as successful as I like my work to be.  On the other hand,  it is always good for me to work with a new subject so I can be expanding my rendering skills.

Red-Winged Blackbird Marker Illustration

red-winged-black-bird-imageIt was fun to practice a bird illustration with my Copic Markers.  This is a Red-Winged Black bird hunched down on top of a Sorghum plant. When using the darker marker hues on the bird, I was careful to include lighter highlights.  Also, when I added the first gold marker to the background, the value was too light. I decided to add a taupe marker right on top. This created a better value against the bird and the two different marker hues added more interest to the background.
